The 65th edition of Cannes Critics' Week, running from May 13 to 21, opens with In Waves by Phuong Mai Nguyen, an animated feature based on AJ Dungo's graphic novel about two young lovers in California facing illness. It is the first animated film ever to open the section, with voice roles provided by Will Sharpe and Stephanie Hsu. The seven competition films include Zou Jing's A Girl Unknown about China's one-child policy, Sara Ishaq's The Station about a female gas station in war-torn Yemen, and Blerta Basholli's Dua about the aftermath of the Kosovo War.
